Hi All,
I was raised in a Catholic church of a small town called Mile 68 in West Papua. Utikini is the name of a small village just underneath Mile 68 the gold and copper mining town. Utikini was founded since the first village Damulituni was totally reduced to rubble by the hugest landslide in the village in 1991.
In 1993 I went to a primary school in another village called Banti Waa about 10 km away from Utikini the village where I lived at that time. I completed the school in 1996 and I was chosen to go to a boarding school that was just founded after the democracy took place in Mile 68 by the local people of Utikini and Banti regarding their own aspirations in terms of education, job opportunities, etc.
At the boarding house, there was a preacher named Rein. Rev. Rein was also a Religious Education teacher at our school. We always had a prayer together every morning before going to school. Since that moment, I started reading the bible and pray actively. At the same time I started becoming closer to the Lord Jesus. Rev. Rein also taught me how to play guitar.
I was the best guitarist amongst my other peers at that time. Therefore, Rev. Rein always trusted me to bringing songs to local protestant churches around the villages even though I am a Catholic. However, I knew that the most important thing in singing in the church is as similar as preaching the Gospel. As the result, some people were touched by our local Christian songs and came to Jesus Christ.
Not too long after that, in 1998 there was a conflict amongst the locals. It’s hard to imagine but there are often issues, differences and gossips amongst us. Well, there are two groups of people amongst us, outsiders and insiders. Outsiders are from different districts and insiders are people living under the mining town.
After the conflict people of Utikini were transmigrated to the lowland area of Timika. So, now the name of Utikini is only a memory. If you have a chance to go there, you’ll see Utikini is just a steppe surrounded by Mount Muluberra and Nagalakinogoma at the right as you walk down to Banti. Banti village still exists until this moment.
