The summer before my Freshman year, my mom went to the doctor for annual tests and found out she had breast cancer. Then only one short month later, my dad went into the hospital to have his heart scoped and possibly a couple stints and ended up having quadruple bypass surgery a few days later. My brother and I had to grow up quickly and learn how to take care of both parents while they were recovering from surgery and chemo and learning how to take care of everything at home pretty much on our own, since both parents were really weak for a while. It wasn't until probably a year later that I realized how close I had become to losing both parents in a very short time. They both ended up recovering very very well and are doing amazing now. The way that they trusted God in everything in their lives and how much comfort He gave them in that hard time began to show me how important He really was, and how much I needed a relationship with Him.
A couple years later I went to a teen retreat and through one of my friends there, I gave my heart to Christ. I eventually started dating that friend because I saw how on fire he was for Christ. For a while it was awesome, because not only did I have a wonderful boyfriend, but an awesome friend, prayer partner, etc. Once he went off to college though he got in with all the wrong crowds and began drinking and smoking and becoming someone I hadn't seen before. But I was so afraid of losing him that I made some really bad mistakes and stayed with him, until he decided he didn't like me anymore after having given me a promise ring and being together almost 3 years. To say the least I was crushed. Not only had I lost my best friend/boyfriend, I had in the process, lost Christ because I had ignored Him when He was trying to get me out of that situation much earlier. I had hit rock bottom and knew that above anything else, I desperately needed Christ back as the center of my life. I am now almost graduated with a bachelor's degree in youth/children's ministry and a minor in vocal music, and I am totally in love with it! I feel that God has called me to minister to kids and help them develop personal relationships with Him, both through my job and also by eventually adopting kids! I can't say that I'm even near perfect but I am trying to do my best and give God my all!
Just last year I had one of my closest friends die at the young age of 15 from leukemia. I feel it is my duty to help share her testimony. She had gone through nearly a year of horrible pain and struggles, but through it all she had the most incredible steadfast faith I've ever seen! She knew that she had to do whatever God called her to do and go wherever He called her to go, even when that meant leaving everyone here on earth. On the day she left, she was in the hospital, she was so sick and filled with fluids and all that she was hardly recognizable. She had absolutely no physical strength left. But this is the totally amazing part! On Sunday August 26th, with her parents sitting on both sides of her bed, her doctors made their rounds at the hospital and told them that they felt Kara had kidney and liver damage that was way beyond repair. At 12:30 noon Kara raised up off her pillow, almost like her head was lifted up because she could not physically do that on her own, and told her parents she was dying, and then with such excitement that she hadn't had in a really long time said "I see Jesus!" She talked with her parents shortly and told them she loved them, and then she said "I love you all and I'm gonna go now". She closed her eyes and quietly slipped away. How amazing is that!?! We know exactly where she is, home with her Master and Savior! Another cool part that I didn't mention was in the middle of the night the night before, her parents were sitting in the room and suddenly smelled an odd smell, one you wouldn't normally smell in a hospital room. They looked around but didn't find anything so they didn't think much of it. the next day when Kara went to heaven they realized that they smelled that same smell, the smell of rain... So next time you smell rain remember Kara's story and her faith in Christ.
Kara, we miss you like crazy here, but I know we'll see you soon in heaven!
