I have found that in order to be really delivered and freed from my chains I had to examine them and name them. I have had to open the doors to some dark closets I had bolted shut, blocked with heavy furniture, and locked up for good! Inside I had kept very painful memories of loss during the time I was without my dad when my parents separated, of fear and shame when I was molested at age 13, and of complete devastation and self-hatred during and following being date-raped at age 15. Those memories and feelings stayed with me and cast heavy shadows on so much of my life; my ability to love and trust anyone in a real way, my image of myself as a person worthy of making her own choices and finding out what she is capable of doing and having in her life. I was miserable and angry a lot of the time. I usually walked with my head down, unable to make eye contact with anyone, and very often spoke so quietly that people wouldn't hear me...not that I felt I had anything important to say anyway! My life was lonely and sad, and I felt as if I had fallen into a dark pit, the top of which I could not see.
Once I found evidence - through the lives of other people and through reading the Bible - that God is a forgiving and healing God, that all began to change. I had the experience of knowing that God sees me, and he wants to hear what I have to say. His Word says that he forgives and lifts burdens off anyone who comes to him and asks for help. I stepped out and trusted that this was true, and my life has been changed for good! Knowing that God loves me and that Jesus died for me so that I could be reunited with God, has made my whole perspective different. He says I am worth something and useful to Him; who am I to say otherwise? He promises that I am clean and whole because I received, and continue to receive, the sacrifice of love that He made for me. I have come to know this much over time, and am gratefully still learning and finding my place in His service. I am keeping my eyes on Him the best I can; I still fail but I don't beat myself up anymore. I just get up again and receive His grace and forgiveness, and continue to walk with Him.

Hands down the Bible is the best book ever! I also have gained a lot from the works of Joyce Meyer and Beth Moore. The best bible studies I have done up to this point are Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby and When Godly People do Ungodly Things by Beth Moore. I just finished reading The Shack, and it has given me a lot to think about. I am encouraged by lots of different musicians and their songs; any music that brings glory to God!
